This module offers a comprehensive introduction to the sociological, psychiatric, psychotherapeutic and ethical aspects of gender diversity.

One of the module’s focuses is on reproductive health and starting a family for trans and gender-diverse people in Switzerland.

Another part of the module is devoted to gender-affirming plastic surgery. Options and the latest developments are presented. A speaker shares their experiences of life before, during and after the operations.

Intersectionality and public health are examined: Vulnerabilities, stigmatisation and barriers to access for trans and gender-diverse people are analysed.  How do social structures affect health and well-being? How can barriers be broken down?

A highlight of the module is the panel discussion on personal experiences: Three transgender panelists talk about their everyday lives, and personal experiences – and what they hope for from society and the healthcare system. This exchange creates space for empathy and understanding.

From the symbolic representation of the ‘gender unicorn’ to scientific evidence: current research efforts and the quality of the evidence base are critically examined. What insights are available, and where is further research needed?

Another focus is on the role of hormones in gender-affirming treatment.

The module concludes with an open discussion session in which reflections, unanswered questions and key findings are discussed together. The aim is to provide impetus for a more inclusive society and healthcare system.
